Coarctation of the Aorta

Coarctation of the aorta is a condition where there is a narrowing of the aorta, the main vessel leading from the left ventricle to supply blood to the rest of the circulation. It usually occurs just below the place where the left subclavian artery branches off - which means the blood supply to the head and upper body is normal, but that to the lower limbs is reduced. In severe cases it may cause circulatory collapse. In less severe it causes high blood pressure and a heart murmur. It can be corrected surgically.
