Cardiomyopathy

Cardiomyopathy is disease of the heart muscle that can arise in association with hypertension or alcohol abuse, but often has no underlying cause. It may cause the heart to enlarge - dilated cardiomyopathy - or it may cause the wall the ventricle to thicken, when it is hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. The symptoms are those of heart failure. If the underlying cause is alcohol abuse, the damage may be reversed by abstaining from alcohol.
