Atherosclerosis
Atherosclerosis is the name given to the condition where arteries are narrowed by degeneration of the arterial wall and the deposition of fat, usually cholesterol, forming an area called an atheromatous plaque. Because this makes the wall of the artery unstable, blood may clot on it, forming a thrombosis. When this happens it may block the artery completely, or it may break off and block a narrower vessel further on in the circulation.
If this happens to the circulation in the brain, it can produce a stroke. If it's one of the coronary arteries, it can produce a heart attack.
