Reiter's syndrome

Reiters syndrome is a condition involving conjunctivitis (inflammation of the lining of the eye, see eye in the head section), arthritis affecting many joints but predominantly those of the lower limb, and urethritis - pain on urination and discharge from the penis or vagina. It may also be precipitated by gastro-intestinal infection. Classically the arthritis comes on within a month of the genital infection, and will resolve over a period of time but may take a number of months. Treatment is aimed at reducing inflammation. Many patients, as with those who have ankylosing spondylitis, of the tissue type HLA-B27.
