Paget's Disease

Paget's disease of bone is due to over activity of the cells - the osteoclasts and osteoblasts responsible for remodelling bone. This causes increased bone turnover and there may be pain and deformity as the affected bone changes shape. This may cause, for example, skull enlargement, or bowing of the lower limb due to effects on the tibia, the larger of the two bones between the knee and the ankle. It may be a cause of deafness if the skull enlargement affects transmission down the nerve running from the ear. Treatment with agents that reduce the activity of the osteoclasts may help.
