Ruptured Achilles tendon

Ruptured Achilles tendon is the condition where the tendon between the muscle at the back of the calf and the back of the heel suddenly splits, usually during an exercise such as running or jumping. The tendon may have been weakened by a previous injury, which may have been sufficiently trivial as to pass unnoticed. When it ruptures it feels as if a blow has been struck. The foot cannot be pushed downwards, so it's impossible to stand on tiptoe on the affected leg. Surgery may be necessary to repair the damage, though it has been treated by immobilisation of the leg in plaster for a period of time.
