Orchitis

Orchitis is inflammation of the testis. While it may occur in association with epididymitis (see this section) it can also be caused by viral infections. The mumps virus is the agent that classically causes orchitis, though other viruses may also be responsible. There is severe pain and swelling, and if this is unilateral it may be difficult to distinguish from torsion of the testicle. Mumps orchitis affecting both testes can lead to permanent infertility. High doses of steroids over a short period of time may prevent this, and relieve symptoms dramatically.
