Dyspareunia

Dyspareunia is pain on intercourse, and it may be superficial or deep. Superficial dyspareunia is felt at the entrance to the vagina and may be due to, for example, infection, or it may be the result of spasm in the vaginal muscles -called vaginismus - caused by tension, fear and lack of sexual arousal, producing a vicious circle. Deep dyspareunia is pain felt in the pelvis during intercourse and may be due to pelvic inflammatory disease, endometriosis, cervicitis, uterine infection or ovarian problems. Superficial dyspareunia due to vaginismus may respond to psychosexual therapy: other causes should have treatment as appropriate.
