Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Inflammatory bowel disease is a term used to describe ulcerative colitis and crohn's disease (described in small intestine disorders in the digestive tract section). Up to 20 per cent of people who suffer these disorders have a relative who also suffers from inflammatory bowel disease. There is an association with certain tissue types, and linkage with susceptibility genes located on chromosome 16. The environmental agent required to trigger the diseases has yet to be identified.
