Hereditary Spherocytosis

Hereditary spherocytosis is a condition where the red blood cells, instead of being shaped like a bi-concave disc, are round. This is due to defective formation of the red cell membrane. The cells are recognised as being abnormal by the liver and spleen and are therefore destroyed more quickly than they should be, causing haemolytic anaemia and increasing the risk of the development of gallstones. This disease is transmitted in an autosomal dominant manner. 50 per cent of their offspring of an affected person will, statistically, be affected.
