Haemophilia

Haemophilia is a disorder of blood clotting caused by a deficiency in one of the essential constituents of the clotting cascade - either Factor 8 or Factor 9 (when it's called Christmas disease). The gene defect resides on the X chromosome, so this is a disorder that is carried by women and transmitted to their sons. Affected males suffer prolonged bleeding after minor injuries, and need treatment with replacement blood factors.
