Cystic Fibrosis

Cystic Fibrosis is a condition where there is a defective gene coding for the protein responsible for transporting chloride ions across cell membranes. This means that all secretions are thick and viscous and salty, particularly those in the lung and from the pancreas (described in lung disorders in the digestive tract section). This is an autosomal recessive condition, which means that both copies of the gene must be defective. There is a screening test available to those who feel there might be a risk of producing a child with cystic fibrosis, but it might be wise to have counselling beforehand.
