Maca is an Andean plant grown for its root. It is also known as maca-maca, maino, ayak chichira, and ayak willku.
The root is shaped like a turnip, and can be yellow, red, black, purple or green with each colour having different characteristics. Black Maca seems to be best for energy promoting properties, while red Maca has been shown to reduce enlarged prostates in animal studies.
As well as minerals, sugars, vitamins and proteins, Maca contains glucosinolates, malic acid, dietary fibre and 19 amino acids. It is said to have aphrodisiac properties, and is available either as a flour, as a gelatinised roduct or as a freeze dried juice.
Nutrients
Maca was eaten by Incan warriors before battle and considered responsible for their high energy levels. It is regarded as a highly nutritious, energy-imbuing food, and as a medicine that enhances strength, endurance and also acts as an aphrodisiac.
