What you need to know

Lucuma is a dry textured, sweet tasting fruit from the Andean region of South America; it is also grown in California and Costa Rica. It is used mostly commercially as a powdered flavouring, particularly for desserts and smoothies.

It is very nutritious and highly flavoured, reminiscent of maple syrup.

What does this food contain?

The bright yellow flesh contains high levels of carotenes and B vitamins as well as minerals and sugars.

Lucuma is one of SOuth America's most valuable fruit exports. The trees are said to be very long lived, some producing fruit for over 500 years.
