foods - lettuce

What you need to know

Lettuce is useful for disorders affecting the Nervous System, the Respiratory System and the Reproductive System.

Lettuce is beneficial for disorders such as insomnia, agitation and bronchitis.

What does this food contain?

Considering that lettuce is 95% water and contains only 7 calories in an average portion, it’s not surprising that it is the weight watchers favourite (or sometimes least favourite). But lettuce is more than water. It contains vitamin C, betacarotene, folic acid, some calcium, lots of potassium, a little iodine and even a modest amount of iron. The darker the leaves, the higher the betacarotene content. The juice has the same properties as a very mild form of opium, and though cultivated lettuces are less potent, they still have some of the sedative effects of their wild ancestor. A lettuce sandwich at bedtime is a healthy alternative to sleeping pills.
