What you need to know

He Shou Wu, also known as Fo-ti, Fo-ti-teng, Ho shou wu, Chinese knotweed or Flowery knotweed is a fast growing flowering vine from China. The active ingredients are found in the roots, stem and leaves.

It is commonly used in traditional Chinese medicine to increase viriliy, purify the kidneys, treat weak bones and premature greying of the hair.

What does this food contain?

AIt contains chemicals which can protect the skin against damage from UV(B), has a high antioxidant content and is a laxative when taken internally. The stem has a sedative action and is used to treat insomnia. Extracts of the plant show some anti-cancer properties. The roots are used in the treatment of menstrual and menopausal complaints and for combating high cholesterol.

Chinese knotweed is a close relative of Japanese knotweed (P. cuspidatum), which is known for containing a chemical called Resveratrol, which has been suggested to extend lifespan by a variety of mechanisms. Chinese knotweed contains stilbene glycosides similar to resveratrol and with greater antioxidant activity
