Camu Camu is a shrub growing by water in the Amazon area. It has dark red or purple fruit a little like cherries and small, white, waxy flowers.
The fruit is sour and unpalatable in its natural state, but contains high levels of Vitamin C, several amino acids, anthocyanins and flavanoids. It also has a strong, pleasant flavour and subtle aroma. It is usually sold as a powder and is often used in desserts, sweets and drinks.
As well as minerals and dietary fibre, Camu Camu contains vitamin C, plus the essential amino acids valine and leucine, very useful for vegetarians as usually found only in meat and dairy and also Serine, which is very good for brain function; it is also rich in flavonoids.
