Cabbage is useful against disorders of the Immune System, the Skin, hair and eyes, the Heart and Circulation, The Nervous System, Bones, Joints and Muscles and the Reproductive System
It is good for disorders such as cancer protection, stomach ulcers, anaemia, respiratory diseases and acne. Like other members of the cruciferous family of vegetables it has been shown to have protective powers against cancer. (Other crucifers include cauliflower, kale, radishes, horseradish, broccoli, spring greens, turnips, brussels sprouts and kale).
Cabbage has rightfully earned its reputation as ‘the medicine of the poor’ and has probably been the subject of more research than any other vegetable. Its healing powers cover an amazing range of ailments. Naturopaths use its juice to treat stomach ulcers. It’s high sulphur content makes it good for chest infections and acne, and the Iron in dark green cabbage is well absorbed thanks to its high Vitamin C content. It’s great for anaemia and should be eaten by all women, especially during childbearing years for its very high content of folate. There is also a high level of chemicals called glucosinolates, a cancer protective agent particularly effective against lung, colon, uterus and breast cancers.

Crush two or three outer leaves with a rolling pin and remove the stalks. Put them in the microwave to heat them for a few seconds, make sure they are not too hot, then wrap them around the affected joint with a towel or bandage. This is an excellent and effective treatment for osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and also sports injuries, sprains and strains.
