Blackcurrants are very good for treating and preventing disorders of the Immune System, Digestive System, Heart and Circulatory System and the Nerves.
They are very useful in treating colds, flu, sore throats, fluid retention, high blood pressure, stress and anxiety, diarrhoea and food poisoning. Their high antioxidant content makes them highhly protective against cancer.
Blackcurrants are exceptionally rich in vitamin C, four times as much as an equivalent weight of oranges. These berries also contain lots of potassium and little sodium so good for fluid retention and high blood pressure. Pigments called anthocyanosides in their purple-black skins, are antibacterial and anti-inflammatory.
See more information in the herbal directory.
Redcurrants, which are a relative of the blackcurrant, contain much less vitamin C but have the additional property of being antiseptic and anti-bacterial. Redcurrant jelly can prevent blistering and infection on burns if applied following plenty of cool water, while the juice is useful in controlling fevers.
