Sub-Conjunctival Haemorrhage
Between the conjunctival membrane and the sclera there are a number of small blood vessels. These may leak, producing an alarming deep red eyeball. Provided there is no history of injury to the eye, or evidence of a foreign body, and there is no pain, the vision is normal, the blood pressure is normal and there is a clear margin to the area of bleeding, it is of no consequence and will resolve over time. If it happens repeatedly then the blood clotting mechanisms should be investigated.
