There is a spot on the back of the eye - the fovea - where there is a very high density of cones. These cells produce the sharpest image, and this is the centre of vision. The area around it is the macula. As we age this area can degenerate, and the cells fail to function. Central vision is reduced, though peripheral vision is retained.
