Presbyacusis

Presbyacusis is also known as senile deafness. This is loss of hearing which occurs in all of us as we get older, as the hair cells and neurones function less well. Initially we lose the ability to hear sounds at higher frequencies. This interferes with the way we hear words, and people seem to mumble. Increasing the volume may help, but it's better simply to speak more distinctly. As the hearing loss progresses we become less able to hear all sounds - a hearing aid may help.
