Otitis Externa

What you need to know:

This condition is frequently caused by irritant chemicals, like chlorine in swimming baths, enzymes in biological washing powders or the components of shampoos, conditioners, hair dyes etc. Wearing a bathing hat when swimming may help, though the latex in rubber is often a cause of allergic reactions.

Avoiding the obvious allergens and covering the ear with a thin layer of Vaseline often helps. Otitis externa can also be caused by eczema.
