Glue Ear

Glue ear is a condition where there is thick glue-like mucous in the middle ear cavity which prevents the eardrum vibrating in response to sound waves. It may be a consequence of infection in the middle ear or blockage of the Eustachian tube. It may resolve when the infection clears or when the tube reopens. In childhood, when it may be persistent and cause deafness which interferes with the development of speech, or the child's education, a small plastic tube, or grommet, can be inserted in the eardrum to allow the mucous to drain, and pressures to equalise.
