Cholesteatoma

Cholesteatoma is a condition which complicates chronic otitis media. The eardrum is sucked inwards and skin cells grown into the middle ear, and then into the air cells of the mastoid cavity. The cells destroy the cavity and can destroy the bone behind it and the inner ear itself. The cells must be removed and the resultant mastoid cavity cleaned regularly. Cholesteatoma may be recognised by the foul smelling discharge it produces.
