Threadworms

Threadworms - infection by the agent enterobius vermicularis - more commonly affect children, where there may be epidemics. The adult worm lives in the colon, and the female emerges through the anus at night to lay her eggs. This causes intense itching: The bottom gets scratched, and then the lips are touched and the eggs transferred, so that re-infection occurs. Some authorities advise that all members of a family need to be treated, symptomatic or not. Wash your hands.
