Rectal Disorders

Rectal disorders in infancy are rare, and often occur in association with other abnormalities affecting the spinal column, the bladder or the genital tract. They arise as a result of the failure of division of the end of the embryonic hindgut - called the cloaca - into its separate urogenital and rectal parts, or of the proper formation of the anus. The mildest abnormality - anal stenosis (stenosis means narrowing) - can be treated by anal dilatation. Others will need surgery
