Rectal prolapse

Rectal prolapse is the condition where part of the bowel descends through the anal orifice. It may be partial, where only the mucosa descends during defaecation, or it may be complete, when both mucosa and muscle layers descend. It is a consequence of straining at stool, and may cause a weakened anal sphincter and incontinence. While high fibre diet may aid the passage of stools, surgery may be necessary.
