Pruritus Ani

Pruritus ani is itching around the anus. By far the commonest cause in childhood is threadworm infection (described in this section). Other causes are faecal soiling, anal discharge in association with internal haemorrhoids, and infection with agents such as Staphylococcus aureus or Candida. It may be a complication of diabetes mellitus, or a consequence of skin sensitivity to a cleansing agent such as soap. The treatment is identification and eradication of the cause, and attention to personal hygiene.
