Pruritus ani is itching around the anus. It may be caused by anal discharge in association with internal haemorrhoids, by infection with agents such as Staphylococcus aureus or Candida, or by threadworm infection. It may be a complication of diabetes mellitus, or a consequence of skin sensitivity to a cleansing agent such as soap. The treatment is identification and eradication of the cause, and attention to personal hygiene.
