Colonic Polyps

Colonic polyps are swellings of the mucous membrane - the mucosa - lining the inside of the large intestine. They may produce no symptoms, but if large they may ulcerate and bleed. They may predispose to the development of Cancer of the bowel. Familial polyposis coli is an inherited condition where multiple polyps form throughout the whole of the colon during adolescence. This conveys a much increased risk of developing Cancer, and advice should be sought regarding the advisability of surgery to prevent this.
