Necrotising Enterocolitis

Necrotising enterocolitis is a condition which affects premature babies in the first few weeks of life. Necrotising means the death of tissue, and enterocolitis means that the tissue affected is in the colon. It is thought to be due to combination of poor blood flow to bowel together with attack by bacteria on the Bulwark. This causes malabsorption and intolerance of food in the bowel together with a bleeding in shedding of the Basle wall. The bowel may perforate. The condition requires intensive care with intravenous feeding and surgery for perforation, together with antibiotics for infection.
