Megacolon

Megacolon is the term used to describe the situation that arises when the colon becomes hugely expanded. This happens either as a result of chronic constipation - occurring, for example, in association with Hirschprung’s disease where there is an abnormality in one of the nerve plexuses responsible for gut contraction - or more acutely as a complication of ulcerative colitis, when the colon becomes large and very friable - called toxic megacolon.
