Hirschprung's disease

Hirschprung’s disease is a congenital condition (i.e. one present from birth) where there has been failure to develop part of the nerve supply responsible for causing contraction of the bowel. Usually only a short segment of bowel is affected. The bowel above becomes full of faeces and distends - there is resulting abdominal pain and constipation. While this usually presents in early life, some cases come to light in adulthood, though there’s always a lifelong history of sluggish bowel habit. The treatment is to remove the bit of bowel that doesn’t work, and join the normal bits together.
