Ano-rectal abscess

Ano-rectal abscesses arise in infection of one of the anal glands which line the anal margin. They may remain confined to the area around the anus - a so-called peri-anal abscess - or they may spread deeper, forming an ischio-rectal abscess. They are more common in patients with diabetes mellitus, Crohn’s disease or those taking immunosuppressant drugs. Abscesses require the attention of a surgeon.
