Anal Fistula
Anal fistula is a condition where there is an abnormal communication between the anal canal and the skin on the outside of the anus. It is both a consequence of, and a cause of, ano-rectal abscesses. It is thought that an initial abscess drained backwards into the anal canal as well as through the surface of the skin, so forming the abnormal track which becomes recurrently infected causing more abscesses. While infective episodes may be managed by antibiotics, surgery will be required to eradicate the fistula.
