What you need to know:

The regular appearance of breast cysts during a woman’s periods is common and frequently party of the PMS package. When this happens it’s considered to be one of the risk factors for breast Cancer - although it’s a minor factor compared to other risks, like having a close family history of the disease.

A major nutritional factor in this cyclic breast condition is caffeine and other related xanthines (in coffee, tea, chocolate, and cola drinks). The herbal supplement Guarana contains a high proportion of xanthines, and women with this condition shouldn’t take it.

Another common factor is thought to be an under-active thyroid, and even when thyroid tests fall within the normal limits, it’s possible than low intakes if iodine could aggravate the condition. Women who suffer chronic constipation also have a higher incidence of this problem, although whether it’s caused by the constipation or by a lack of specific nutrients contained in high-fibre food which would prevent the constipation isn’t clear.

Women with this problem should avoid all foods and drinks which contain caffeine and all meat and dairy products which may have been treated with artificial hormones, so buy organic.

It’s essential to eat lots of wholegrain cereals, legumes, all fruits and vegetables (organic where possible) oily fish, nuts and seeds and to drink at least 2 litres of fluids a day,
