Sub Arachnoid Haemorrhage

The space between the lining of the brain - the meninges - and the brain itself is called the sub arachnoid space. There are blood vessels which run in this space which can develop swellings or malformations which are weak, and can burst. While in the adult there is the sudden onset of severe, catastrophic headache, and usually loss of consciousness, in the child (where it is rare) it usually presents with collapse and coma. In the adolescent the symptoms may be difficult to distinguish from meningitis - either needs emergency attention.
