Motor Neurone Disease (MND)
Motor Neurone Disease (MND) is actually a group of diseases with different symptoms, all of which involve degeneration of motor nerves.
These control our movement. They run from the top of the brain (the cortex) to the spinal cord. These are called Upper Motor Neurones. From the spinal cord onwards to the muscles they are called Lower Motor Neurones.
Degeneration of these nerves causes the muscle to twitch, become weak and waste away. The disability this causes depends on the nerves affected; for example if it’s the muscles of the larynx and throat, then there’s difficulty in speaking and swallowing. This is a very rare disease in those under the age of 40 in the western world, but is more common in young Indian adolescents, when only one group of motor nerves may be affected, and the outcome relatively benign.
