Mania

Mania is considered by some to mirror depression: the spirits are elated, the patient hyperactive, impatient and sometimes hostile and aggressive if they feel their ideas are opposed. There may be involvement in plans that are flamboyant and grandiose, and beyond the capabilities of the sufferer, or indeed anybody else. There is disregard for the consequences of actions or speech. There may be frank delusions of supernatural abilities, and reckless financial and sexual behaviour.

The response to drugs which also act as anti-epileptic agents suggest that this disease is a result of imbalance in some of the chemical messengers that the brain uses to slow down some of its activities.
