Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is increasingly recognised as a condition resulting from an abnormal frightening experience, such as rape or mugging or exposure to violence, as in periods of conflict.
There is irritability, insomnia, flashbacks and feelings of fear. There may be associated panic disorder and depression and increased dependence on alcohol or illegal drugs. There is some evidence that that there are underlying biological abnormalities in the connections between the hypothalamus, at the base of the brain, and the pituitary. There is also evidence that in times of severe stress brain function becomes more sensitive to chemical action, and that the effects may be prolonged. Psychological treatments may help.
