Hunter's and Hurler's Syndrome
Hunter's and Hurler's syndromes are two of a number of genetically determined disorders where there is a defect in the degeneration of the substance mucopolysaccharide - an essential part of the supportive tissue in skin, bone and cartilage, which is usually broken down during the process of growth and development. The excess mucopolysaccharide is deposited in various tissues, including the skull (causing enlargement of the head), the tissues of the face (causing coarsening of the features, or gargoylism) the brain (causing mental retardation) and the heart.
