Fragile X Syndrome

Fragile X syndrome is a condition which may cause severe learning difficulties in affected males. Since it is an X linked disorder, it only manifests itself in males (because females have two X chromosomes, and males have only one) and is carried by the female. Examination of the chromosomes shows a gap at the end of the long arm of the X chromosome, making it appear broken which is why it is called fragile X. Since this is an inherited condition genetic counselling and examination of chromosomes of relatives may be beneficial.
