Dementia

Dementia means 'absence of mind'. It covers a group of conditions where there is breakdown of mental function and contact with reality due to degeneration in brain structure.

ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE (known as pre-senile dementia) is due to the development of plaques of a material called amyloid, and tangles of neurofibrills, surrounding dead neurones. It causes loss of short-term memory, and progressive decline in functions such as speech and emotional relationships. As the disease progresses, distant memory is also lost and delusions and hallucinations develop. There are genetic factors involved, and the environment and life-style play a part, but the cause is ill understood.

MULTI-INFARCT DEMENTIA is caused by brain deterioration resulting from a number of small strokes.
