Cancer of the Bones

Cancer of the bones in children is one of two types, called osteosarcoma and Ewing’s sarcoma. Osteosarcomas usually occur in adolescents, and affect the end of long bones - most commonly around the knee. Ewing's sarcoma is a Cancer of childhood and usually affects the middle of long bones. In both cases there is pain followed by the development of a bony mass. Surgery, together with radiotherapy and chemotherapy may be curative. As with most other cancers why these occur is unknown, but some children with Ewing's sarcoma have a chromosomal abnormality.
