Thrombocytopaenia

Thrombocytopaenia is a condition where there is a reduction in the number of circulating platelets to below the normal level of 150 x 109 per litre. Mild cases may be the result of viral infection or a side effect of drug treatment. There are autoimmune causes, where the platelets are destroyed by antibodies, as in Immune Thrombocytopaenic Purpura (ITP), causing rashes and nose bleeds. This may be acute, usually following an infection and mostly affecting children, when it resolves with no treatment, or chronic, when it may need treatment with steroids or, in severe cases, removal of the spleen.
