Leucocytosis

Leucocytosis means an increased white cell count. The white cells multiply in response to a challenge, so which cells increase in number depends on what’s mounting the challenge. If it’s a bacterial infection, then the neutrophils increase, while if it’s a virus, the lymphocyte count rises. Parasitic infection, and allergic responses such as occur in asthma, produce an increase in the number of eosinophils.
