Arterio-Venous malformations arise when arteries are joined directly to veins, usually in the brain, where they may be associated with severe epilepsy or recurrent episodes of sub arachnoid haemorrhage. There may be an overlying birthmark - or port wine stain - on the skin, called the Sturge-Weber syndrome. They may be treatable by surgery or radiotherapy.
