Behcet's Disease

Behcet’s disease is a generalised disorder involving ulcers developing in the mouth and round the genitals together with inflammation of the eye, blood clots in leg veins, and arthritis. Rarely there may be neurological and psychiatric problems caused by involvement of the brain. It is thought possibly to be due to cross-reaction between antibodies produced in response to infection by a microbe and a protein present on many of our cells. It is associated with a particular tissue type, which indicates that both genetic and environmental factors are important to the development of the symptoms. While oral ulcers may respond to topical treatment using steroid creams or tablets, other manifestations may require more potent immunosuppression.
