Phaeochromocytoma

Phaeochromocytoma is a tumour of the adrenal medulla, the middle part of the gland which produces adrenalin. This causes attacks of palpitation with rapid heart rate, high blood pressure, anxiety, headache and flushing, though not all symptoms may be present. Rarely the abnormal tissue may be situated elsewhere than the adrenal. While the symptoms due to excess adrenalin may be damped down using, for example, such treatments as beta-blockers, the management of phaeochromocytoma is, if possible, to remove it.
